A number of people will tell you that food catering is good business. In fact, many would want to be in the food industry simply because everyone gets hungry, right? It is just the matter of timing, location, and of course good food that everybody would enjoy.
Considering that large margins may be applied on the resulting products and services, there is truth in this. But oftentimes, it is based on the following assumptions:

- You enjoy cooking and preparing the appropriate cuisine for your clients. You may do the actual food preparation yourself or if you have others to do it for you, then you can just supervise.
- You have the acumen to manage such a business. This means overseeing the production, marketing, and financial management. (Of course, you can always get a partner who can handle these for you.
More often than not, an individual who has the cooking creativity and skills has very little business know-how. And it is for these individuals that various types of catering software are geared.
These applications can make the life of any business oriented chef easier. Usually, a recipe costing facility is included in the software. This enables a more convenient means of preparing quotations, since it is just a matter of marking-up the figures to cover the overhead such as administrative and other expenses as well as the margins.
Many of these software types also provide a means of tracking event financials, so that the determination of income per event is facilitated. On the marketing aspect, a client contact manager and event calendar are usually incorporated.
These may seem like a simple application to those in the know. In fact, a combination of different applications may be used to achieve the same purpose. However, our chef is unlikely to experiment with software combinations in order to determine the one that best suits him (or her).
The advantage of software for catering is that it makes some business management functions more convenient for the entrepreneur chef. And this allows him more time to focus on his core responsibility, which is food preparation. Hopefully, this added focus will make him more competitive and profitable in this line of business.
